OBA calls for Bermudiana Beach and other empty Gov’t buildings to be used for critical BHC clients; Ministry says Bermudiana rental levels and insurance differs too much

The OBA’s Michael Fahy, Shadow Minister of Housing & Municipalities, has once again raised the question why empty units Bermudiana Beach resort are not being made available to critical waitlist clients of the Bermuda Housing Corporation.
This followed comments by BHC chair Chris Famous, who says they are exploring alternative construction methods that could provide homes faster and cheaper.
However, a Ministry of Housing spokesperson said the Bermudiana Beach Resort rental levels, insurance requirements, and tenancy arrangements differ from the model used by the BHC to provide for critical clients.
Therefore, “the units are not currently suited to meeting the urgent needs of individuals and families seeking emergency or long-term affordable accommodation.”
