Smith surges to fifth in Mossel Bay as Hayward tests mettle in Portugal

Bermudian triathlete Tyler Smith has recorded his strongest finish of the 2026 season so far, clinching a superb fifth place at the Africa Triathlon Premium Cup in Mossel Bay.

Competing on South Africa’s world-renowned Garden Route, Smith navigated a testing standard-distance course in 1:51:28. After exiting the 1.5km swim in ninth, he maintained his position through a grueling 40km bike segment. However, it was the final 10km run where the 27-year-old truly excelled, clocking a blistering 32:31—the second-fastest time in the elite field—to surge into the top five.

Meanwhile, in Quarteira, Portugal, fellow Bermudian Oliver Hayward gained vital experience against Europe’s best young talent. Competing in the Junior Elite Men’s Division, the 17-year-old finished 43rd with a time of 59:07. Hayward remained resilient through a high-intensity 750m swim and 20km bike before closing with an 18:13 run.

The results mark a significant weekend for the Bermuda Triathlon Association across two continents. While Smith continues his hunt for world ranking points, Hayward’s performance provides a vital stepping stone for the island’s next generation of triathletes.
