The immediate future of the CARIFTA Games has been secured, with Guyana confirmed as host for 2027 and Barbados awarded the 2028 edition following intervention by CARICOM Heads of Government.
The announcement by NACAC Athletics comes after the unexpected withdrawal of two previously interested member federations just days before the CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting held from 5–8 July.
Facing a sudden hosting void, NACAC Athletics made a direct appeal to CARICOM leaders, emphasizing the urgent need to preserve the region’s premier junior athletics showcase.
“On behalf of the NACAC Athletics Council, officials, and athletes of the NACAC Athletics family, I wish to thank the CARICOM Heads for their swift and positive response in support of the CARIFTA Games,” said Mike Sands, President of NACAC Athletics.
“I especially thank President Ali of Guyana and Prime Minister Mottley of Barbados for agreeing to host CARIFTA 2027 and 2028. This secures the immediate future of what is arguably the world’s premier junior athletics event.”
The swift resolution guarantees continuity for Caribbean track and field’s flagship youth competition as it prepares for its next two cycles.
