Grand Canyon University’s Nixon Lauritzen has secured a dream PGA Tour exemption to the 2026 Butterfield Bermuda Championship after defeating the University of Wyoming’s Brody Leid in a tense, sudden-death playoff at the National Golf Invitational. Both young stars finished regulation tied at a record-breaking 18 under par before returning to the 18th tee at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes, where Lauritzen sealed victory with a steady par against Leid’s costly bogey.
Facing a 154-yard approach into the 18th green from a challenging right-side sand dune, the tactical equation for Lauritzen was highly complex. The pin was tucked tight, sitting just three paces from the right edge where the putting surface cascaded sharply down into a protective pond. Hitting first in the sudden-death shootout, the sophomore pulled a 50-degree wedge from his bag with the wind blowing at his back, filled with absolute certainty that his ball would safely find the green.
The young amateur delivered under immense scrutiny. His clinical wedge shot bit nicely, settling just 20 feet from the flagstick, while Leid’s approach lacked the same control, leaving the Wyoming player nearly double that distance from the cup. The distance proved terminal for Leid, whose ambitious first birdie putt came up six feet short. After Lauritzen safely lagged his attempt to within a couple of feet, Leid missed his tense par save, punch-marking Lauritzen’s ticket to Port Royal Golf Course in Bermuda this autumn.
