Bermudian freshman Zachary McGuire produced an unblemished weekend on court as Sacred Heart University delivered a commanding performance at the Army Invitational in New York.
The former Saltus Grammar School pupil underlined his emerging pedigree on the US collegiate circuit, sweeping to a flawless 4-0 combined record across singles and doubles competition at West Point.
McGuire was forced to show plenty of grit to open his account on Saturday, recovering from a set down against Fairleigh Dickinson’s Asaf Schwartz. Having dropped the opener, the teenager held his nerve in the crucial moments to level the contest before running away with a decisive match tie-break to seal a 3-6, 7-5, 10-4 triumph.
He carried that momentum into Sunday’s meeting with Holy Cross’ Colton Parker. Settling into an authoritative rhythm from the baseline, McGuire dictated proceedings throughout to ease to a clinical 6-4, 6-2 straight-sets win.
The former Bermuda junior champion proved equally effective in doubles play, chalking up two further victories across the weekend to cap an encouraging autumn outing for the Division I Pioneers.
