Long awaited figures tied to government receipts for sugar tax are in.
Today, Minsiter of Finance Premier David Burt revealed the government collects $6 to 7 million annually from sugar tax on high sugar content products.
The tax, which is a 75% import tariff applied to sugar-enhanced beverages, candy, and cocoa was designed to tackle high rates of obesity and diabetes, introduced back in 2018.
Shadow Finance Minister Dr. Douglas DeCouto today called for it to be scrapped and for health officials to find a system that properly incentivises choice for lower sugar options.
