Four records fell on a historic opening day of the Bermuda School Sports Federation’s Middle School Track and Field Championships, as the island’s rising stars lit up the Flora Duffy South Field Stadium.
The morning began with a masterclass in the throwing events from Mount Saint Agnes Academy standout Xander Romeo. Competing in the Over 13 category, Romeo claimed the first record of the day in the Discus with a dominant throw of 36.00 meters. He followed that performance by shattering the Over 13 Shot Put record with a massive heave of 15.35 meters, comfortably eclipsing the previous mark of 13.79 meters held by Lateef Trott.
The technical events continued to produce historic marks in the Turbo Javelin. The Whitney Institute’s Charlie Simons delivered a standout performance to win the Under 12 Boys title with a record-breaking throw of 27.05 meters. On the girls side, the Under 12 record of 17.70 meters was surpassed by two athletes with Myla Cornish of Bermuda High School securing gold with an impressive 26.48 meters, while Saltus Grammar’s Charlotte Murdoch-Smith took silver with a throw of 20.11 meters, also besting the old mark.
In the overall team standings, defending champions Saltus Grammar School hold the narrowest of leads with 136 points, pursued relentlessly by Warwick Academy on 135.33. The Whitney Institute sits in third with 108 points. The divisional battles remain equally poised as Bermuda High School leads the way in the Girls Division with 84 points, while The Whitney Institute holds a slim advantage in the Boys Division with 89 points. With only fractions of a point separating the top schools, all eyes return to the stadium for the final day of competition.
