Tragedy at Waco triathlon

Bermudian women finish in the top 15

The IRONMAN 70.3 Waco Triathlon was marked by tragedy on Sunday after a competitor required medical attention during the 1.2-mile swim and later died in hospital in Texas.

IRONMAN officials confirmed the death and offered condolences, noting the somber atmosphere surrounding the event.

Despite the difficult news, a trio of Bermudian female triathletes delivered strong performances across the 70.3-mile distance.

Lesley-Jane Smith led the charge, finishing in a superb 6:00:40 (481st overall, 65th female). Her time was enough for an excellent 12th place in the Female 40-44 Age Group.

She was closely followed by Melissa Logie with a time of 6:07:38 (543rd overall, 80th female), who claimed 14th in the same age group and recorded the fastest run split among the Bermudians (2:09:27).

Rounding out the island’s effort was Nicola Hallett, who finished in 6:25:21 (727th overall). Hallett secured a notable 10th place finish in the Female 50-54 Age Group Division, concluding a determined day of racing for the Bermuda flag in Texas
