Youth Parliament to debate lowering voting age

Current members and alumni will face off in a public House of Assembly debate on youth voting rights, live on Wednesday evening

The Office of Youth Affairs has set the stage for Bermuda’s next generation of leaders to occupy the central place for debate, the House of Assembly, in a special Youth Parliament Debate examining the motion: “This House Would Lower the Voting Age to 16 in Bermuda.”

Representing the Government, current Youth Parliamentarians will defend the motion, while Youth Parliament alumni will assume the role of the Opposition. With three speakers on each side delivering five-minute speeches, attendees can expect thoughtful arguments, respectful debate, and compelling perspectives on youth participation in Bermuda’s democracy.

More than a debate, the event celebrates the enduring legacy of the Youth Parliament programme by highlighting the leadership journey from student participant to alumni mentor. It offers a unique opportunity for the public to engage with important discussions surrounding civic responsibility, public policy, and the evolving role of young people in shaping Bermuda’s future.

The Youth Parliament programme continues to provide young Bermudians with meaningful opportunities to develop leadership skills, deepen their understanding of parliamentary procedure, and strengthen their commitment to civic engagement.

The Minister of Youth, Social Development, and Seniors, The Hon. Tinee Furbert, along with others, will judge the debate. Members of the public are invited to attend or view online what promises to be an inspiring evening of debate and dialogue.

The debate starts at 6 pm on Wednesday, July 8, and Live coverage will be broadcast on CITV and can be viewed on One Communications Channel 2, Digicel Channel 3, and TBI-TV Channel 102.
