Bermuda’s Daniel Phillips saw his impressive run at the M15 Kayseri tournament come to a heartbreaking end after falling in a grueling three-set thriller in the singles first round.
Following a flawless qualification campaign on the Turkish hard courts, the rising Bermudian star faced a formidable main-draw test against tournament seventh seed Volodymyr Iakubenko of Ukraine. In a match defined by dramatic shifts in momentum, it was the seeded Ukrainian who eventually edged past the line.
Iakubenko took a cagey opening set 7-5 after securing a crucial late break, but the 21-year-old Bermudian responded in spectacular fashion. Phillips completely dominated the second set, turning the match into a tactical masterclass of power and precision to storm through 6-1.
The deciding set proved to be a high-stakes, physical battle. Despite a resilient effort from Phillips, who pushed the tournament favorite to the absolute limit, Iakubenko found the definitive late break to close out the final set 6-4 after over two hours on court.
