Minister: Modular homes a ‘bridge’ to permanent housing, not a replacement

Housing Minister provides clarity on use of modular and expandable container homes

Modular housing is not a replacement for permanent developments and will only be used in a highly targeted manner to address urgent and transitional housing needs.

That’s according to Zane DeSilva, Minister of Housing and Municipalities, who sought to provide some clarity about how the Government will utilise this alternative form of construction to tackle the island’s housing crisis.

Minister DeSilva previously announced that a pilot site of eleven modular and expandable container homes is expected to be installed by next March somewhere in the west end of the island.

Speaking in the House of Assembly today, he stressed that the units are intended to provide immediate relief for persons in the most critical need on a short-term basis, while they transition to permanent housing solutions.
